At Eastling Primary School, we believe that children only get one childhood. Every day, our children are given the time, space and freedom to play, explore, imagine, create and discover.

As a Double Platinum Outdoor Play and Learning (OPAL) School, we recognise that high-quality play is fundamental to children's health, happiness, wellbeing and development. Play is not simply a break from learning; it is one of the most powerful ways children develop confidence, resilience, creativity, problem-solving skills and lifelong friendships.

Through our play provision, we ensure that every child has access to rich, varied and inclusive opportunities that allow them to flourish socially, emotionally, physically and academically.

Why is Play So Important?

Children spend approximately 20% of their school life playing. Over the course of their primary education, this equates to around 1.4 years spent exploring, creating, building, collaborating and learning through play.

Research consistently demonstrates that high-quality play supports every aspect of children's development. It helps children to:

• develop communication and teamwork skills;
• strengthen physical health and coordination;
• use their imagination and creativity;

What is OPAL?

OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) is an internationally recognised school improvement programme that helps schools transform playtimes into high-quality opportunities for learning and development.

Rather than viewing playtime simply as a break between lessons, OPAL recognises play as an essential part of childhood and an integral part of children's education.

At Eastling, OPAL is woven into the fabric of school life. It influences the way we design our outdoor environment, organise resources, supervise play and listen to children's ideas.

Our Platinum Award recognises our commitment to providing outstanding play opportunities and reflects the dedication of our staff, governors, families and children in creating an exceptional play environment.

What Does Play Look Like at Eastling?

Every playtime offers children opportunities to choose how they play and who they play with.

Our children enjoy opportunities to:

• climb trees and challenge themselves physically;
• build dens and create imaginative worlds;
• explore nature and care for wildlife;
• cook in the mud kitchen;
• construct using loose parts and natural materials;
• investigate sand, water and messy play;
• play collaboratively across different year groups;
• invent games and solve problems;
• role play, perform and create;
• enjoy quieter spaces for relaxation, conversation and reflection.

We believe there is no single "right" way to play. Every child is unique, and our environment provides opportunities for all children to play in ways that are meaningful to them.

Children help shape future developments through pupil voice, Play team, School Council and regular consultation.

Working Together

Our wonderful play environment has been created through the support of our whole school community.

We are incredibly grateful to our parents and carers who continue to donate loose parts, waterproof clothing, dressing-up clothes, household items and recyclable materials that enrich children's play experiences.

You can continue to support us by:

• ensuring your child has a named waterproof coat every day;
• providing a pair of named wellies to keep in school;
• embracing messy play—sometimes the best learning comes with muddy knees!
• donating suitable loose parts and resources when requested;
• encouraging outdoor, imaginative and creative play at home.
