Maple have been on a wild plant hunt, searching for daisies, buttercups, nettles and daisies and using a tally chart to record our results. We also found clover, bluebells and ivy.
Maple Class experimented with jelly to see if different preparation methods could change how long it takes jelly to set. We prepared three jellies according to the instructions, one with fresh pineapple, one with tinned pineapple and one with no pineapple. We predicted what would happen to our jellies, timed how long it took for each jelly to set and discussed and recorded our results in a table. The jelly with fresh pineapple did not set even after being left for 20 hours. The tinned pineapple jelly was semi-set after 20 hours and the jelly with no pineapple was set by the end of the afternoon.
We had a virtual reality workshop exploring mini beasts. We engaged with discussions and answered questions including classifying if a mini beast was an insect, arachnid or mollusc.
Maple Class explored the life cycle and metamorphosis of a pond frog through a fun game. We learnt about the 4 life stages of a frog - frogspawn, tadpoles, froglets, frog. We all began as frogspawn and played rock paper scissors to move onto the next life stage. The aim of the game was to develop into a frog by the time the timer ran out.
Maple Class conducted a Water clock experiment We have used a water bottle, water and food colouring. Cutting the bottle and piercing a small hole in the lid, we have poured the water into the top and used a stopwatch to measure either 30 seconds for bottle 1 or 1 minute for bottle 2. Each time the interval has passed, we have recorded a mark on the bottle and considered whether it is an accurate measure of the passing of time. We have poured the water back into the top and observed the water flow indicating minutes and seconds passed to test our hypothesis that it is an accurate measure.
The theme of this year’s British Science Week is time. Acorns enjoyed reading Seren’s Seasons and then challenged the children to independently write their own sentence about a season.
During Science Week Acorns loved mixing up their own potions in the garden using a range of coloured water, flavourings, foam , sand and soap flakes. They observed what happened including colour changes, bubbles and changes in texture too.
As part of our science week learning Miss Humphrey helped Acorns to investigate apples. We first described the apples from the outside, using our senses to think about their colour, texture and scent. We then used string and rulers to measure the circumference of the apples (a new word to add to our scientific vocabulary!) comparing their sizes. We then took a close look at what the apple core looked like and discussed what happens to the seeds. We put the apple core into a plastic bag and will observe any changes of time, linking to this years science week theme.
As part of British Science Week Acorns were visited by Kieran and his virtual reality headsets! We had to put the headsets to our eyes when Kieran told us too and were guided through the ocean on an adventure. We learnt lots about coral, jellyfish and whale sharks. What a wonderful opportunity for us all and a fab end to Science week!
After reading Handa's Surprise and learning about different fruits, Acorns used Mrs Neesham's juice maker to make some tasty juice. Acorns have been learning about Antarctica. This week we were lucky when the weather gave us snow and ice to explore. Acorns love learning about the different seasons and signs of these on our weekly nature walk. So far we have learnt about what nature looks like in autumn and winter.
